The St. Luke’s Medical Center-Global City last October 4, 2011 officially opened its Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and Infertility (CARMI), the hospital’s state-of-the-art facility offering special services to couples having fertility problems. Department of Health Undersecretary Ted Herbosa graced the simple inauguration ceremonies along with St. Luke’s Medical Center President Jose Ledesma, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joven Cuanang, and Dr. Virgilio Novero, Jr., head of CARMI. Envisioned to be another center of excellence, CARMI has been designed to be the country’s most advanced IVF laboratory with its top-of the-line equipment and the introduction of new tests and services that will help it deliver world-class infertility results.

In his welcome address, Dr. Novero explained that CARMI is a gathering of world-class board-certified specialists who have trained locally and/or abroad, and is fully-equipped to treat both local and foreign infertile couples. The center will provide a complete package of reproductive health care services of high international standard. And yet, rates will be very affordable and are comparable with those of respected IVF centers in Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand. “The cost of services in CARMI are quite similar to those in Taiwan, so there should be no reason why Filipino couples would have to leave the country for IVF treatment,” says Dr. Novero, who is known in the local infertility circle of doctors as the “The One” who holds the enviable record of high pregnancy and delivery rates.Undersecretary Herbosa, himself an accomplished doctor, read the prepared message from DOH Secretary Enrique Ona who praised the efforts of the St. Luke’s management in setting up another world-class specialty facility. At the same time, suggestions were made on how government can partner with St. Luke’s in helping provide world-class services to help the less privileged Filipinos. The event was attended by a mix of doctors, would-be patients, representatives from the pharmaceutical industry, and other stakeholders. Aside from St. Luke’s doctors of various disciplines, guests from other Metro Manila hospitals and those representing the Philippine Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (PSREI) and other specialty societies graced the affair.
