Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) is a variant of IVF whereby sperm and eggs are placed together in the fallopian tube with the aid of laparoscopy to facilitate the process of fertilization. This is in stark contrast to IVF where fertilization is accomplished in the laboratory before the formed embryo is eventually transferred into the uterus. GIFT was more popular in the late 1980s to the early 1990s and is currently less performed because of significant improvements in success rates using standard IVF in recent decades. However, it remains as a choice fertility procedure by certain patients for ethical and moral reasons. The main disadvantage though is the requirement for the use of a laparoscope in a semi-invasive procedure.
